Venus Williams lost to Canadian Rebecca Marino on Monday in her re-visitation of singles play after over a year away, a loss the seven-time Grand Slam champion credited to being corroded
Williams lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the primary round of the Citi Open in Washington in her most memorable singles match since last August.
“I didn’t think I played well a ton of the times,” Williams said. “Simply attempting to shake off some rust. That is simply normal. There’s nothing left but to simply play another competition and play better.”

Kinsman Kyle Edmund crushed qualifier Yosuke Watanuki 6-4, 7-6(8) to win his most memorable ATP Tour-level singles match since October 2020.
Edmund, who was once the highest level Brit and move as high as fourteenth on the planet, was out while recuperating from three knee medical procedures.

“There was extensive stretches where I was barely out, couldn’t play, didn’t get a racket. … It simply wasn’t fun in any way,” he said. “These kind of matches or these occasions are something you envision when you’re out.”
